Background of Women’s Golf In the Olympics

Golf was a sport featured in the Summer Olympics official program in 1900 and 1904. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to reinstate this event for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Copenhagen in October 2009. The International Golf Federation is responsible for selecting which athletes will compete at the Olympic Games. It’s also the international governing body for the sport.

In 2016, the qualifications for the Olympics are mainly based on the Official World Golf Rankings. The top 15 male and female players automatically qualify, and then the highest-ranked players from countries that have not yet already qualified two players will also be considered.

There were 10 competitors from two nations (France and the United States) who played the match on October 3 at the Compiegne Club. The game was won by Margaret Abbott from the United States, the first American woman Olympic champion. Abbot’s mother, Mary Abbott, was also one of the only two women to compete in this event in the Summer Olympics at the same Games as her daughter.
